Frequently Asked Questions
What is
ASTA and why was it formed?
ASTA,
the Australian Shepherd Trial Association, was formed to showcase the
working abilities of Australian Shepherds by developing competitive stockdog
trials using a point/time and time only trial system. The ASTA trial system
requires a high standard of work centered on efficient handling of
livestock. In keeping with this purpose, ASTA strives to give assistance to
trial organizers and participants as needed, while affording ample freedom
to event organizers to determine what best suits their location, livestock
and personal preferences.
What
are point/time and time trials ?
A point/time event is one in
which competitors receive points for each head of livestock that completes the
various obstacles comprising the course in a required manner, usually in a set
amount of time. Time only events are similar in that courses consist of various
obstacles but instead of using points per head through each obstacle to score
runs, an obstacle time and/or course time is used to determine placing.
What
are ASTA Regional Trials?
ASTA regional trials are
course/time and time only events held in various locations in the United States
and Canada.
What
are the requirements for hosting a regional ASTA sanctioned event?
To host a regional ASTA
sanctioned trial, the individual organizing the event must be a member of ASTA.
The trial course must be a point/time or time only event.
Who can
enter an ASTA regional trial?
You do not need to be a member
of ASTA in order to participate in an ASTA regional trial. ASTA has no
restrictions as to breed or registry of dogs entered, but Trial Organizers may
limit participation as specified on their trial flyer.
How do
I get my regional trial sanctioned by ASTA?
For ASTA to sanction a regional
trial, the Trial Organizer must submit an official sanctioning form to ASTA
with the appropriate fee. The sanctioning form is
located in the files section
of the membership’s email discussion list
How is
the design of courses at ASTA regional trials determined?
ASTA courses are as varied as
each course designer's imagination and creativity. ASTA does not dictate courses
or the arrangement of obstacles.
How can
I find an ASTA regional trial?
ASTA trials can be found on the
ASTA web site events calendar. ASTA trials are listed free of charge to Trial
Organizers.
What is
the Annual ASTA Trial, who can enter, and how can I find the date and location?
The Annual ASTA Trial is a national event that takes place each
year at various locations. It provides competitors with a high level of
competition by offering uniquely designed, challenging courses and sizeable
purses. ASTA membership is required to enter. Only dogs registered as Australian
Shepherds may participate in the Annual ASTA Trial. Proof of registration must
accompany entry forms. Trial date and location will be announced each year on
the ASTA website.
